Avoiding complications of gastric bypass surgery

Gastric bypass surgery has helped thousands of people gain control of their weight, shed excess pounds and live healthier lifestyles. However, it is a very controversial topic, and there are still many doctors who believe it is not worth the risks that it entails.

Most surgeons who are in favor of gastric bypass surgery believe that if the surgery is performed properly and if the patient is aware of the possible complications, that patients can be kept safer.

Some of the complications of gastric bypass surgery are minor, like ulcers or dumping syndrome. However, some can be quite serious, like narrowing of the anastomosis or anastomatic leakage. Long-term complications are poor nutrient absorption and hypoglycemia. Because of these complications, it is crucial that gastric bypass surgery patients read all of the literature given to them by the surgeons. Not only that, but patients must follow the directions to every minute detail.

Doing so will lessen the risk of complication, and it will help the patient know when something is seriously wrong. Being able to recognize the signs of a serious complication is crucial to getting proper medical attention to put the patient on the road to recovery before something truly dangerous happens.
